Surgical vs. Non-Surgical Treatments for Turkey Neck

Tuesday, May 21st, 2013

Dr. Jennifer Walden discussed face and necklift surgical options versus nonsurgical Venus Freeze with Keri Bellacosa of Fox 7 on Good Day Austin.

The Venus Freeze is device that emits radio-frequency thermal energy that’s non-invasive. Dr. Jennifer Walden describes how you can get 6 to 8 treatments, that will eventually melt the fat and tighten the skin area depending on the body area treated, including the turkey neck. The best thing about these treatments, besides being non-invasive, is that they are less expensive and require no downtime.  However, she also explains that a surgical face and necklift will create long-lasting results in just a matter of hours, and shows some amazing before and afters of patients of hers who have undergone cosmetic surgery.

Venus Freeze is a great option for those of us who may be a bit more hesitant about going under the knife! But a surgical face and necklift address sagging muscle, fat and skin and remain the gold-standard for long-lasting dramatic results.

Dr. Walden Discusses Overrated Procedures with KVUE!

Monday, April 1st, 2013

In this segment, Dr. Walden chats with KVUE news anchor, Yvonne Nava, about Allure’s 11 Most Overrated Cosmetic Surgery Procedures.

Dr. Walden explains that not only may some of these procedures have undesirable side effects, but many of them have not been proven to be effective. She begins by discussing the “Vampire” face-lift, and reminds us that there is no scientific evidence that this procedure even works. An unproven procedure, costing patients anywhere from $1,000-$4,000 could be a waste of money.

Additionally, she explains that some of the procedures, such as laser liposuction, have no benefit over their respective standard procedures. Laser lipo has not been proven beneficial over standard liposuction, and therefore patients could be adding both unnecessary time and some potential additional risks.

One of the most interesting procedures from the list is called the “Foot Lift”. Dr. Walden explains some women may be undergoing liposuction of the short toe or shortening of the middle toe in order to fit into their expensive designer shoes such as Jimmy Choos or Christian Louboutin’s. As one might guess, with so much of our balance and gait relying upon our feet, many orthopedic surgeons and foot doctors advise against this procedure.

The following is Allure’s complete list:

The “Vampire” Face Lift
Laser Liposuction
The Stem-cell Face Lift
Sculptura and Artefill for Lips
Silicone Cheek Implants
Ulthera
Fat Injections for Breasts
Brachioplasty
Butt Implants
Zerona Fat-Melting Laser
Foot Lifts

Labiaplasty Procedures on the Rise, Reports Austin Plastic Surgeon, Dr. Jennifer Walden

Sunday, March 24th, 2013

A growing new trend in the world of cosmetic medicine, Dr. Walden explains how more women are choosing this popular procedure.

Nationally-known plastic surgeon from Austin, Texas, Dr. Jennifer Walden, has seen a rise in a certain type of procedure that you may find surprising. Frequently lending her expertise to the national media, Dr. Walden took a moment to explain a growing new trend in the world of cosmetic medicine: labiaplasty. A way for women to improve the form and function of their labia, Dr. Walden detailed some of the treatment’s important patient-side benefits.

“The most common goal of a labiaplasty procedure is to reduce the size of the labia minora,” reports Dr. Walden. “A situation that can affect women both physically and emotionally, a labiaplasty is essentially an excisional procedure, used to make the labia smaller and more cosmetically appealing.” Each labiaplasty procedure, Dr. Walden explains, is custom-tailored to each patient’s unique needs and goals. Adjunct treatments can include labia majora reduction, clitoral hood reduction, vaginal rejuvenation, and labial fat grafting or Juvederm plumping.

Asked to speak on motivating factors behind undergoing a labiaplasty procedure, Dr. Walden added this: “Each patient chooses this procedure for a different reason - a reason that is important to her. Common motivating factors include irritation of the area, problems with personal hygiene, an interference with sex, and/or discomfort during certain activities such as biking or running.” For some patients, Dr. Walden explains, the goal of a labiaplasty remains solely cosmetic.

Further demonstrating a commitment to patient education, Dr. Walden was recently interviewed by leading health resource, Medscape, which is part of WebMD’s network of websites. One of the interviewer’s most important questions centered on potential patient-side benefits of a labiaplasty procedure. “There have been a lot of well-done studies on this procedure, and there also have been a lot of case reports and small series, not just in the plastic surgery literature but in the obstetrics and gynecology literature,” Dr. Walden explained to Medscape. “My labiaplasty patients are some of my happiest patients because it’s a relatively straightforward and short procedure that’s done on an outpatient basis. Within about an hour, it can be kind of life-changing.”

Asked to speak on the future of this cutting-edge approach, Dr. Walden concluded that as female plastic surgeon, she understands firsthand the unique medical needs and cosmetic goals of patients seeking this type of surgery. This is why I can say - with quite a bit of certainty - that these bikini area procedures will only grow more and more popular in the future.”

Venus Freeze Reduces Body Fat Without Laser Burns

Saturday, December 29th, 2012

Recently interviewed by the uber-talented Jim Bergamo of KVUE - TV, Aesthetic Plastic Surgeon Dr. Jennifer Walden introduced the latest technology in her office, the Venus Freeze. If you’ve been looking for a product to rid body fat while tightening the skin, this noninvasive treatment might be for you.

Before the Venus Freeze similar procedures could often be quite painful due to laser burns, however the new Venus Freeze promises to deliver the results you desire without the pain you dislike.

Bridget Brady, 40, is a surgeon, an avid exercise enthusiast and a mother of two. Although she diets and exercises regularly, her last pregnancy left her unable to rid unwanted fat.

“There’s parts of my body that I would like just to be a little tighter and have a little fat reduced on,” said Brady.

When Brady heard about the new Venus Freeze being less time consuming and pain-free, she decided to visit Dr. Walden for more information.

“It uses radio frequency or sound waves to melt fat and tighten the skin,” said Dr. Walden. “What makes this different is that it’s painless - it’s actually pleasant.”

The Venus Freeze uses a magnetic pulse component that induces the release of growth factors required for the sprouting of new blood vessels and the rapid growth of skin cells. An RF component induces collagen and elastin production by creating controlled damage and triggering the skin’s healing process. The intended result is more vital, toned and healthy looking skin with improved elasticity and texture.

Dr. Walden said this FDA approved machine involves a modest fat reduction and skin tightening over a period of time. The results are not instant from one treatment, but with multiple treatments this machine delivers results, said Dr. Walden.

Venus Freeze stomach treatments last roughly 40 minutes and facial and neck treatments usually take 20 minutes.

Rising Trend: Mother and Daughter Plastic Surgery

Monday, December 17th, 2012

For most mothers and daughters, bonding time comes in the form of a shopping excursion, however now there’s a new trend of going under the knife together. Aesthetic Plastic Surgeon Dr. Jennifer Walden visited the KVUE-TV Austin studio to discuss this rising trend!

The average age range of women seeking plastic surgery is 35 to 50 years, however there is a growing range of younger women in their early twenties interested in plastic surgery. Mothers and daughters, now more than ever, are beginning to seek surgical procedures at the same time.

Dr. Walden suggested that a mother and daughter may elect to have surgeries at the same time because they can act as support systems for one another. She believes the camaraderie and bonding in the post-operative stage of plastic surgery is the reason fueling this rising trend.

Surgical procedures range from family members or close friends choosing rhinoplasty, or breast augmentation and even a mother choosing a facelift and her daughter wanting breast augmentation, said Dr. Walden. This growing trend has truly become a family affair, allowing confidantes to bond throughout the surgical process.

Recovery from plastic surgery is about two weeks, with one week off from work or school. Dr. Walden suggests that if you do decide to go under the knife at the same time, it is imperative to have a qualified caregiver oversee you and your loved one during the recovery process.

Austin American-Statesman Reporter Gets Hands-on Experience with the Vectra 3D!

Friday, November 16th, 2012

Recently, well-loved Austin American-Statesman reporter Omar L. Gallaga interviewed Dr. Jennifer Walden about her latest technological addition to her West Lake Hills-area plastic surgery practice, the Vectra 3D.

During the interview, Dr. Walden described the Vectra 3D which she has been using since September, and even gave Gallaga a first-hand experience with the machine.

The machine works by taking multiple photos of the desired area – whether it be the face, upper or lower body – which are then digitally simulated on the computer screen, allowing Dr. Walden to modify the patients appearance. The machine is useful to both plastic surgeons and patients, because the 3D image is a more accurate analysis of the anatomy, but also because it gives patients an idea of what to expect before the first incision is ever made.

After Gallaga posed in front of the machine and his picture was digitalized on the computer screen, Dr. Walden carefully modified the tip of his nose, in what she described was a ‘conservative nose job.’ Using the Vectra system, Dr. Walden was able to rotate the 3D model of Gallaga’s face, and even produce side-by-side frontal and profile views of the changes made with the 3D system.

Teenagers Turn to Plastic Surgery to End Bullying

Thursday, November 15th, 2012

As the Internet and social media become so much a part of our everyday lives, the pressure has mounted for teens and young adults to look a certain way.

More teens are undergoing the knife after being tormented about the way they look.

Cosmetic Plastic Surgeon Dr. Jennifer Walden sat down with KTBC – Fox Austin to discuss the rising trend of plastic surgery in young adults.

“There has been a 30 percent rise in teenage plastic surgery in the last decade,” said Dr. Walden.

Dr. Walden said she performs a cosmetic procedure on a teenager at least once a month, and she’ll soon operate on 15-year-old Brianna Cruz.

Cruz says she was bullied because of her nose from a young age, and has finally made the decision, with her mother’s consent, to seek plastic surgery.

According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, there were more than 76,000 cosmetic surgical procedures performed on teens in 2011. Nearly half were nose reshapings, and the other most common procedures were breast augmentation, ear surgery and male breast reduction.

With any procedure on a minor, parents should be involved in the decision-making process and should consult with a plastic surgeon that is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery.

New 3D Imaging Software in Austin

Monday, October 15th, 2012

Dr. Jennifer Walden joined KVUE News in an interview to discuss a new, 3-D imaging software to help patients decide whether cosmetic surgery is right for them.

The Vectra 3D software takes three simultaneous photos of the patient. Then, in just a matter of minutes, those photos begin forming a three-dimensional image of the patient on the computer monitor. The Vectra 3D allows the surgeon to alter the image in 3-D, giving prospective patients a more realistic view of what they can expect to look like after surgery from multiple viewpoints.

“It’s an exciting new technology that can really help with preoperative planning, managing patient expectations and showing prospective patients what they will look like before the first incision is ever made,” said Dr. Walden.

Before the Vectra 3D, Dr. Walden said they could show before and afters to patients or change the two-dimensional profile view, but there were inherent limitations in what could be done to successfully predict a prospective patients postoperative image. With the help of the new 3-D imaging software, Dr. Walden can give her patients a more realistic outcome.

Dr. Walden is the first plastic surgeon in Austin to use the Vectra 3D camera and software.

Get the Facts on Fat Distribution After Liposuction

Monday, October 15th, 2012

During Perry Watson’s “Medical Update” on KLBJ News Radio, Austin plastic surgeon Dr. Jennifer Walden helps clear the air about the extremely popular cosmetic procedure liposuction.

Liposuction slims and reshapes specific areas of the body by removing excess fat deposits, improving your body contours and proportion, and ultimately, enhancing your self-image. Last year, nearly 205,000 liposuction procedures were performed in the United States, making it one of the most popular cosmetic procedures, second only to breast augmentation.

Dr. Walden said liposuction surgery is not a treatment for obesity, rather the procedure is for people who are at or near their ideal weight.

A new study from the August edition in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, the official journal of The American Society of Plastic Surgeons refutes last year’s study from the medical journal Obesity regarding what happens to your body after liposuction.

Dr. Walden said there has been on-going legend and folklore that after liposuction, fat returns in odd distributions to other areas of the body remote from the area suctioned.

The new study confirms that a person can have weight gain or contour abnormalities after liposuction, but it can and sometimes will only go to areas that have undergone liposuction, not to lipo-free areas like your arms, neck or face. She notes that although liposuction permanently removes fat cells, it is not a replacement for regular exercise and good eating habits.
