Labiaplasty is a surgical procedure that can alter the size and shape of your labia majora or labia minora. It can be done because of an enlarged labia that causes physical discomfort or for aesthetic reasons. As with any surgery, labiaplasty has a recovery process. You might have bruising, swelling, and mild pain or discomfort following surgery.
Immediately After Surgery
Once you can leave the recovery room, you are usually discharged home. Your surgeon will give you instructions on postoperative care, including follow-up appointments, caring for the incision site, and managing pain or discomfort. You should follow your doctor’s postoperative care instructions to minimize the risk of complications.
Pain Management
Depending on your situation, your doctor may recommend over-the-counter pain medication or prescribe stronger pain medication for discomfort. Ice packs can also help with postoperative swelling.
Caring for Your Wound
To prevent infection, it is imperative that you follow your doctor’s instructions for wound care and hygiene. You should keep the area dry and clean. Use mild soap and water to clean the area. Wear cotton underwear and avoid tight clothing to help minimize irritation. Furthermore, avoid using tampons, as they could introduce bacteria to the healing area. Your surgeon will let you know when it’s safe to use tampons again.
Complications to Look For
It can take several weeks for the swelling and discomfort to subside. Do not have sex until your doctor says it’s okay—usually around six weeks. Complications are rare, but you should always know what to be aware of. Complications could include abnormal swelling, infection, and excessive bleeding. Follow postoperative instructions to minimize this risk. Always report signs of complications to your doctor so that they can check you over. Even if you are not sure whether something is normal, call your doctor and ask.
