What Is Tuberous Breast Deformity, and How Can Breast Surgery Address It?

Tuberous breast deformity can affect the shape, symmetry, and proportions of one or both breasts. At Jennifer L. Walden, MD, PLLC, we examine the breast base, nipple and areola position, skin, and volume before discussing options such as breast augmentation with a lift. Dr. Jennifer Walden is board-certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery and fellowship-trained in aesthetic surgery. Her curriculum vitae also documents a live surgical presentation on breast augmentation and circumareolar mastopexy for tuberous breast deformity.

What Does Tuberous Breast Deformity Look Like?

Tuberous breast anatomy differs from the more rounded breast base many people expect. Features can include a constricted base, drooping, enlarged or prominent areolas, and breast tissue that pushes through the areolar area.

These characteristics do not always appear equally on both sides. One breast may look noticeably different from the other, which is why some women first recognize the issue as asymmetry rather than a specific breast condition.

How Can Breast Surgery Address Tuberous Anatomy?

Increasing volume is only one part of correcting tuberous anatomy. Surgery also needs to account for the breast base, skin, areola, and how the two sides relate to one another.

For some women, breast implants can restore volume and improve proportions. If sagging or nipple position is also a concern, augmentation can be combined with a breast lift. A circular incision around the areola is commonly used when treating tuberous breasts, although the exact incision pattern depends on your anatomy and surgical plan.

The aim is to create a more balanced shape rather than simply make the breasts larger.

Is Breast Augmentation Alone Enough?

Sometimes, but an implant does not correct every feature of tuberous breast deformity. If the breast base is constricted or there is significant drooping, augmentation alone may leave some of the underlying shape concerns unchanged.

An in-person exam helps determine which features actually need correction. We can then discuss whether augmentation, a lift, or a combination would better address your anatomy and goals.
