BUTTOCK AUGMENTATION WITH FAT TRANSFER (BRAZILIAN BUTTOCK LIFT)
If you want to enlarge or reshape your buttocks and have discovered that the area does not respond to diet or exercise, buttock augmentation may be the solution you’ve been looking for. A buttock lift (butt lift) contours the buttocks and compensates for low amounts of fat in the area. Women and men who enlarge their bottoms can enjoy a more voluptuous and perky profile. This type of augmentation can be safely achieved through injections of the patient’s own body fat.
Buttock augmentation with fat transfer, also known as the “Brazilian butt lift” in honor of the country in which it was developed, is performed with the patient under general anesthesia. The surgery involves two steps. First, our surgeons collect the patient’s own fat through a process via to liposuction within a sterile, closed system to prepare the fat for later placement into the gluteal region. The most popular areas for harvesting fat before buttock augmentation are the lower back, waist, flanks (love handles), thighs and stomach. This not only provides the raw material for buttock enhancement, it also contours the areas around the butt for a more dramatic result. The fat that has been removed is then purified using a special device so that the fat cells are ready to be reintroduced to the body with minimal reabsorption.
Fat Transfer Vs. Implants
The preferred method for performing buttock augmentation is a Brazilian butt lift because it uses the patient’s own body fat to reshape the butt. Fat injection achieves a more natural result, has a lower risk of infection and no risk of allergic reaction or rejection. In addition, this procedure contours the areas around the buttocks to enhance the overall effect. Implants are generally only recommended for patients who have very little body fat to harvest, such as body-builders and those patients who are exceptionally thin.
Candidates for Brazilian Butt Lift
A Brazilian butt lift can enhance the natural curves for patients who are unhappy with the shape of their rear ends. It can also add volume and roundness to a flat or small butt for patients seeking a more balanced body profile. Body-builders may seek buttock augmentation if they are unable to develop gluteal muscles in proportion with the rest of their bodies. Generally, if you are at least 18 years old and you are looking for a fuller, curvier butt, a Brazilian butt lift may be for you.
Recovery From Brazilian Butt Lift
After a Brazilian butt lift, patients should avoid sitting directly on the buttocks or lying on their backs for two to three weeks to maximize results. During this time, compression garments may be worn to reduce swelling. Patients may experience some pain or discomfort, bruising and swelling after the procedure. Most patients return to work within two weeks after their buttock augmentation and are able to resume all normal activities within four weeks. Swelling typically dissipates by the sixth week and the final outcome is visible.
How Can I Prepare for a BBL?
You want to be in your best possible health before undergoing your Brazilian Butt Lift. Contrary to what may seem logical, it is not recommended that any patient gain weight for this procedure! The best results are achieved in patients whose BMI is at or below 30. This way, there is no unnecessary risk to the final outcome of surgery. If you lose weight after having BBL treatment, the shape and volume of your newly-defined buttocks could change. In addition to stabilizing your ideal weight, if necessary, you can prepare for your BBL procedure with the following:
- Avoid smoking and the use of nicotine for at least six weeks prior to surgery.
- Begin sleeping on your stomach or side. This will help you sleep comfortably after surgery when you cannot sleep on your back.
- Arrange sufficient time off work. You will need at least two weeks to recover before returning to normal work. If your job demands more physicality, you may need additional time off.
- Arrange to have help. You will need someone to drive you home after your surgery and may want someone to stay with you for a day or two.
- Arrange your home to support a low-impact recovery. Place essential items in convenient areas so you do not need to climb stairs, bend, or perform other restricted movements.
- Consider making about one week's worth of meals ahead of time. Also, stock up on healthy snacks and entertainment!
You can expect to receive detailed pre-surgical care instructions from our office before your surgery date. These may include additional tips for approaching surgery in the best possible way.
How Long Before I see Results?
Your results from BBL surgery will be noticed right away. That said, what you see the day after surgery will be different one month after surgery and may be different each week or month until six full months after your procedure. Throughout this time, your swelling and bruising will subside. Some of the fat that is moved will also be lost to natural absorption. Anticipating this, your doctor will perform your fat transfer accordingly, ensuring that you have beautiful curves once your final outcome is revealed.
How Long do BBL Results Last?
The fat that is moved to the buttocks is expected to remain in its new site forever. The primary factor that can influence the appearance of your BBL is your weight. Fluctuations can alter the volume and shape of your buttocks just as changes in weight affect any other area of the body. This is why it is advantageous to have a Brazilian Butt Lift at a time when you are very happy with your weight and also have the habits in place that will help you maintain it.
Can I Sit After my Brazilian Butt Lift Procedure?
You can sit down to use the bathroom after having your BBL procedure. That is about all that your doctor will want you to do. To allow the fat grafting process to occur optimally and without unnecessary disruption, you need to avoid sitting for more than a few minutes at a time. When working, watching shows, or doing other stationary activities, you will need to lie on your stomach. You may also rest on the front side of your hip if that is comfortable. Your sitting restrictions will likely last for two full weeks, possibly longer. After some time, your doctor may clear you to sit using a special pillow that keeps pressure off of the buttocks.
What Kind of Anesthesia Will be Used During My Brazilian Butt Lift?
The BBL procedure is performed while you are under general anesthesia. Before the procedure begins, the board-certified anesthesiologist will administer an exact combination of medications that put you "to sleep." The benefits of general anesthesia and being unconscious during surgery go beyond not being aware of what is happening. When under general anesthesia, your brain does not respond to natural reflexes or pain. You cannot feel pain during surgery, and it can take some time to regain full sensation. This is advantageous because you remain comfortable during the initial stage of recovery while you're still in the surgical center. Once your bodily sensations come back on board, you will manage post-operative discomfort with prescribed or over-the-counter medication.
Are There Scars from BBL Surgery?
You can expect to have small scars in the area or areas your doctor performs liposuction. These are usually very small and fade to a point where they are barely noticeable. You may have a hard time finding your scars once they have fully matured!
Is Brazilian Butt Lift Surgery Safe?
Several years ago, not long after the popularity of BBL surgery skyrocketed, some concerning statistics were published. Research findings brought the safety of this procedure into question. Upon further investigation, it was discovered that Brazilian Butt Lift surgery is actually quite safe. The issue that had arisen was that some surgeons were performing this procedure without proper training, and with ambiguous ethical standards. If you're curious about BBL surgery and want to learn more about the risks and rewards of this procedure, it is imperative to seek out a board-certified plastic surgeon with an impeccable reputation. Dr. Jennifer Walden has served patients in the Austin and NYC areas for many years. Since 2016, she has been named one of Castle Connelly's Top Surgeons. She is also the first woman to be appointed President of the Aesthetic Society. Her status in the medical community is a testament to her high standard of ethical, patient-centered care.
During your consultation with Dr. Walden, you can expect to learn about all of the most common side effects that can occur after Brazilian Butt Lift surgery, as well as potential complications, even those that are uncommon. Generally, patients who undergo Brazilian Butt Lift surgery experience transient swelling, bruising, tenderness, soreness, numbness, and contour irregularities. As the injected fat integrates into the buttocks, contours even out, and side effects naturally diminish. Though much less common, there is also a risk of prolonged contour defects, infection, and the accumulation of fluid or blood in the surgical area. In addition to performing your procedure with the utmost care, Dr. Walden will also discuss how you can reduce the risk of surgical complications through postoperative care.
Can I Return to My Normal Workouts After My Brazilian Butt Lift?
Once you have recovered from your Brazilian Butt Lift, you can resume your normal level of physical activity without risk to your results. That said, you may want to revisit your approach to exercise and long-term wellness. As you know, your results from BBL surgery will be influenced by your overall weight. Your diet and exercise habits should revolve around weight management and can also include activities that build muscle tone. Some suggestions that may help you return to your healthy, active lifestyle include:
- Get to know what your daily calorie requirements are and stick with the right amount. If you don't consume enough calories from nutrient-rich foods, the deficit could result in fat loss anywhere in your body, including your newly augmented buttocks.
- Develop a good balance between strength training and fat-burning exercise. High-intensity exercise that significantly increases your heart rate may be good for fat-burning but may be catastrophic for your BBL results. Particularly in the early stages of life after your Brazilian Butt Lift, you want the fat cells to remain plump and resilient against shrinkage.
- Focus on the glutes. Many patients wonder if they can perform squats, lunges, and other glute exercises after having BBL surgery. The answer is yes! Incorporating isolated muscle-building exercises once you've been cleared for all levels of activity can be an excellent strategy for maintaining optimal buttocks contours.
- Take it slow. As motivated as you may be to return to your active lifestyle after your Brazilian Butt Lift, remember that your procedure had two parts to it. You've had liposuction as well as fat transfer to the buttocks area, which can take a toll on your body, requiring more rest and fewer reps of your favorite exercises. Listen to your body as you return to your normal workouts. Even slight increases over time can pay off with gorgeous cosmetic effects.
