Dermal fillers are FDA-approved and safe for use by most patients. Many of the fillers are made from substances found naturally in the body or synthetically made to mimic natural substances or stimulate collagen production. These fillers are injected directly into the skin of the targeted area to restore volume and reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Dr. Jennifer Walden offers patients several different dermal filler options in order to provide the best possible results for their individual needs.
Juvéderm® Family of Filler
Juvéderm® filler is an FDA-approved smooth-consistency gel capable of restoring volume to the skin while smoothing away moderate-to-severe facial wrinkles and folds. This filler is made of hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring substance in the skin that adds volume and hydration. But unlike other hyaluronic acid fillers, which usually have granular consistencies, Juvéderm® filler is easily injected into the skin and produces immediate, natural-looking results.
What Is Juvéderm® Ultra?
Most people don’t think of their lips when they think of the volume loss that comes with aging. Our cheeks sag and sink. The area around our mouth sags, allowing smile lines, parentheses line, among others. But our lips lose volume, as well. This makes them become thinner as we get older.
Other women have never been satisfied with the fullness of their lips. Or they’d like to add definition, especially to the upper lip line.
Juvéderm® Ultra is the answer. Created specifically to add volume to the lips, Ultra gives you back the fuller, rounder lips of your youth. Or, it adds the volume you’ve always wanted. Either way, Ultra will make your lips plump and kissable, and it will erase those annoying vertical lip lines.
Juvéderm® Ultra adds volume to the lips for up to one year.
Juvéderm® Ultra Plus is the same formulation at Ultra, but it is made from larger particles, so it is meant to target deep creases and folds around the mouth. Ultra Plus is a good option for erasing nasolabial folds running from the nose to the corner of the mouth, marionette lines running downward from the corners of the mouth, parentheses lines framing the sides of the mouth, and the vertical barcode lines that form just above the lips. Juvéderm® Ultra Plus erases deeper lines and creases for up to one year.
Dr. Walden would refer to this as “age-related midface volume loss.” You call it sagging cheeks. Volume loss can be especially telling in this area of the face. As our bodies produce less and less collagen (production declines one additional percentage point every year after the age of 20), our skin loses much of its underlying support. This allows the skin to sag, which not only allows wrinkles and creases to form, but in the cheeks it simply makes them droop and flatten. This really ages the face.Juvéderm® Voluma is designed to add volume beneath the skin’s surface to lift and contour the cheek area. Plump cheeks are a tenet of a younger look. Voluma is the longest-lasting hyaluronic acid filler, adding volume to the cheeks for up to two years!
Patients can achieve a fuller, younger appearance while still maintaining the natural features that define who they are. Juvéderm® filler is most effective in reducing the appearance of nasolabial folds, the lines that run from the bottom of the nose to the corner of the mouth on both sides of the face.
Juvéderm® injections take about 15 minutes to administer in Dr. Jennifer Walden’s office; there is no need for anesthesia. Dr. Walden or her nurse injector may choose to apply a topical or injectable anesthetic to numb the treatment area and reduce the risk of any potential discomfort. The injection is then administered under the skin in the targeted area to add volume or fill in wrinkles and folds. After the injection, Dr. Walden may gently massage the treated areas.

Can Juvéderm® Be Combined With Other Fillers?
Juvederm® is a perfect complement to Botox. This is because they work in different fashions. The Juvederm® products are all dermal fillers that simply return volume to areas mainly in the mid to lower face. Botox relaxes wrinkles formed by muscle contractions on the upper third of the face. They can be combined in a single session.
How Is Juvéderm® Different Than Botox?
The various Juvéderm® fillers Dr. Walden offers are all hyaluronic fillers. Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring substance in our bodies that is responsible for hydrating and plumping the skin. It does this by binding with nearby water molecules. When injected beneath a wrinkle or crease, or an area of volume loss, Juvéderm® fillers simply add volume, pushing the skin back upward. Juvéderm® and other dermal fillers work on wrinkles and lines that show themselves at all times. These are called static wrinkles and they are the result of sun damage, declining collagen production, environmental factors, and natural aging.
Botox is a neuromodulator made from the botulinum toxin. It works in a completely different manner than a dermal filler. When Botox is injected into a muscle, it temporarily stops that muscle from contracting. On the upper third of the face, wrinkles form when we make certain expressions such as frowning or showing surprise. These actions engage muscles and over time wrinkles form on the skin above the muscle. This type of wrinkle is known as a dynamic wrinkle. Dynamic wrinkles form on the upper third of the face: crow’s feet at the side of the eyes, the 11s between the eyebrows, and forehead lines.
Bottom line, Juvéderm® erases static wrinkles caused by sun damage and collagen loss; Botox erases dynamic wrinkles caused by muscle contractions.
Recovery After Juvéderm® Injections
Once treatment is completed, patients can return to their regular activities right away, with virtually no downtime. For the first 24 hours after treatment, patients should avoid strenuous exercise, excessive sun or heat exposure, and consumption of alcoholic beverages to reduce the risk of complications after treatment. Some patients may experience mild side effects such as redness, swelling or itching, but these usually go away on their own after a short time.
Are There Side Effects With Juvederm® Fillers?
The most common side effects include tenderness, swelling, firmness, lumps/bumps, bruising, slight pain, redness, and mild itching at the injection sites. Juvéderm Voluma® and Ultra Plus are somewhat thicker than Juvéderm® Ultra and Juvéderm®, so these side effects, although rare, are moderately uncomfortable and may last two weeks and sometimes longer.
Dermal Filler Results
The results of Juvéderm® injections are visible immediately after the procedure and will continue to improve over the next few days as any swelling and bruising subside. Results are expected to last six to nine months but, in many cases, last up to year, the only hyaluronic acid filler to provide results that last that long.
Juvéderm® Voluma soft tissue filler is a recently FDA-approved product made of a longer lasting hyaluronic acid that can be used to produce cheekbone enhancement for very nice and long lasting results (around 18 months).
