Microneedling has been around a long time, but it has suddenly received new attention due to celebrities such as Gwyneth Paltrow and Naomi Watts, who have become converts to this skin improving procedure. Vogue magazine recently called microneedling “the next big thing in anti-aging.” Dr. Walden provides microneedling in her Austin, Texas practice.
What is microneedling?
The concept behind microneedling is to create a wound to the skin so that the body responds with its wound-repair mechanisms, predominantly new production of collagen and elastin, the two skin proteins responsible for the skin being firm and supple. The wound is created by our microneedling pen, which has many tiny needles in it. The pen is moved across the treatment area, and it basically stamps the skin, penetrating to a depth of between 0.5 and 2.5 millimeters. The penetration depth is adjusted depending on the skin issue being treated and your individual goals.
These microneedles penetrate the skin and create thousands of micro-channels into the skin. The channels are so small that they begin to heal immediately and are fully closed within a few hours. But the body perceives the little punctures as wounds, and it responds by sending fibroblasts to create new collagen in the treatment area. This improves the texture actually thickens the skin.
A secondary benefit of the microscopic punctures is that it allows topical serums and lotions better access into the skin.
This has to hurt, right?
Microneedling is actually not uncomfortable. We apply a topical numbing cream prior to your session. Most patients say the procedure feels akin to a light scratching or even tickling while it is happening.

what will I look like immediately afterwards?
After your treatment your skin will be red. The degree of redness will be a reflection of how many passes were made over the treatment area. The next day, your micro-channels will all have healed and your skin will now look as if you have a moderate sunburn. There may be some swelling. By the third day, any swelling will have subsided. Your skin could still be somewhat pink, or could have returned to its normal tone. It looks refreshed and glowing by the 4th -5th day!
