Rhinoplasty is a surgical procedure used to change the shape and/or size of your nose. Under normal conditions, the procedure may require a couple of hours, during which you will be under the effects of an anesthetic, local or general. The procedure itself requires only an incision, either inside a nostril or on the column that separates your nostrils. Your skin will then be lifted and any necessary sculpting will be done, after which your skin will be stitched back into place.
Following this procedure, there are some things to know and do that can aid in a healthy recovery. Take a look at how you can care for your nose after surgery.
- Side effects: After the procedure, swelling is very common. Very rarely, you may suffer from an infection, or an allergic reaction to anesthesia. Along with the swelling, some stuffiness and pain may be present, as will some degree of bruising and bleeding.
- What you should do: If you wear glasses, you have to take care that they do not rest on your nose for as long as seven weeks. If, on the other hand, you use contact lenses, then there isn’t much to worry about and you can use them immediately after the surgery. You will have to wait for at least a week before you can resume your work life. It is also important that you control the swelling. Note that, during the first one year after the procedure, you may suffer from bouts of swelling, which usually begin in the morning and reduce as the day progresses. You may be required to use splints for a few days to ensure that your nose remains stable. You should also avoid any strenuous activity until your surgeon advises you that it is okay. Finally, use ice packs or cold compresses in the first 24 hours after the procedure to ease some of your discomfort.
