Leave it to the Kardashians to shed light on a topic that usually isn’t front and center in the public consciousness — vaginal rejuvenation. Last spring on her reality TV show, Khloe Kardashian couldn’t stop talking about a vaginal “laser” treatment she had just done called ThermiVa.

Why vaginal rejuvenation?
A woman’s tissues in her vagina can become relaxed after vaginal childbirth and due to simple aging. This laxity can diminish sensation during intercourse, reduce sexual satisfaction, and affect relationships.

The procedure serves many functions for our patients: it can aid in sexual satisfaction, improve the appearance of the vagina, relieve discomfort, aid in proper hygiene, and even boost self-confidence. How does ThermiVa work?
As with all skin, collagen is the key. When radiofrequency energy is applied to the dermis, the skin’s second layer, the body responds as if wounded, producing more collagen to “heal” the wound. When existing collagen is heated, the molecules contract, remodeling and reorganizing the molecular network, both tightening the skin and encouraging new collagen to be produced.
When delivered to the labia on the outside of the vagina and the internal tissues, the RF energy triggers the desired tightening.
The procedure
With ThermiVa, Dr. Walden uses a small wand applicator to deliver the radiofrequency energy both to the interior walls of the vagina and to the external labia and other tissues. This energy delivery is non-invasive, and there isn’t any downtime. But once delivered, it immediately begins tightening the interior and exterior tissues. Studies have shown it helps with vaginal laxity, blood flow to the region helping with sensation and lubrication, and with female sexual functioning such as desire, arousal, ability to orgasm, and how we feel about sex.
Dr. Walden recommends three ThermiVa treatments, once per month, for optimum results. The effects last for around one to two years, at which point the ThermiVa procedure can be done again. There is no downtime with ThermiVa.
